Whether you might be looking to buy or build a new home or renovate an existing one, making the right roof choice can be complex – especially considering the context of your build and the variety of roof types. So, because we endeavour to inform your personal and professional choices, this blog post is designed to shed some light on some of the more popular roof types.
Arguably the most popular roof iteration, the gable roof is very popular with domestic properties. Its simple nature means construction and design process is relatively free of complexities. A gable roof also coincides with cost effectiveness, and little material wastage, which is always good. The construction details two sloped faces meeting at a central ridge, and forming two triangles at either side.
This design holds the positives of being able to leave extra room for an attic, alongside its simplicity, as its main draws. However, there is the chance that extreme weather can negatively affect the structure if the support is inadequate or the overhang is too large.
Coming in at a close number two in terms of popularity is the hip roof. All four walls gently slope toward the house, forming in a ridge at the centre (in the simplest form of the roof). Hip roofs are, naturally, more complex to construct than their (arguably) more popular, gable counterparts.
The hip roof is more stable than a gable roof, and one of the most secure of the more popular choices. This safety is a tradeoff for the increased complexity, as hip roofs main issue is with perfecting the angles, which grows more difficult with the more walls that must come together.
The simplest roofing form is a flat roof. These are often found in commercial and industrial properties, considering their quick construction and decreased costs. Covering large areas quickly is a great draw for a flat roof, which explains their popularity with businesses. What’s more, domestic iterations of flat roofs are growing in popularity recently as a result of the modern, minimalistic look they can achieve.
The modern aesthetic and simple, cost effective fabrication of flat roofs make up the main positives for this choice. They also offer the ideal platform for solar panels, rooftop gardens and penthouse rooms, so future applications are more accommodated for than with other styles. Contrastingly, flat roofs expose themselves to the potential for puddling water, due to their shape. Although flat roofs are ‘flat’, they often have a slight slope to encourage runoff, but it is something to consider.
Effectively, most of the aforementioned roof types are the most popular and common renditions for a reason. They’re stylish, practical and often simple to put into practice. So long as the roof is adequately constructed and supported, all of these roofs will serve your home or business well.
